So you’ve seen the draft edits, and the narrative seems to be coming together nicely. But, the editing journey is far from complete. One of the final stages of the editor’s workflow is the picture grade.
A Note on Work-In-Progress Edits
Before delving into the technical aspects of picture grading, it’s worth noting that the work-in-progress edits we share with clients normally haven’t been graded yet. They may only have had very basic colour correction. Therefore, they will look unfinished — colours may be flat, and lack vibrancy. A work-in-progress edit (often referred to as an ‘offline’ edit) is a content assembly, and is shared for editorial feedback. Only once the content edit has been signed off, the stage in the process known as ‘picture lock’, will the project enter the finishing stage, often known as the ‘online’ phase.
What is Picture Grading and Why is it Important?
Picture grading is the adjustment and alteration of a video’s colour, brightness, and contrast. Beyond simply making visual corrections, grading is a refined art that has the power to convey mood and atmosphere, as well as to provide a consistent aesthetic that fits within an organisation’s brand identity.
How Is Picture Grading Done?
Grading is conducted with the use of specialised software, such as Davinci Resolve and Lumetri, where editors and colourists can meticulously adjust each shot, even enhancing individual elements within shots. They work closely with directors, and directors of photography to ensure the visual style and mood are in harmony with the video’s purpose and message.
A Game of Tones
The picture grade is an essential step in the production of a high-quality video. Not only does it provide a layer of polish to your film, it can enhance the viewer’s experience by creating mood and atmosphere.
